Gravel Calculator
Use this gravel calculator to estimate how much gravel you need for a driveway, path, landscape bed, drainage area, base, or other project. Enter the length, width, and depth to calculate gravel volume, cubic yards, estimated weight, tons, and optional bag quantity. Choose from common gravel types or enter a custom density when you have supplier data.
Measure length × width × depth to find volume. Convert the volume to cubic yards, then use the gravel density to estimate weight or tons.
Gravel Calculator
Estimate gravel volume, weight, and optional bag quantity for driveways, paths, bases, and other projects.
Estimated weight based on 105 lb/ft³ density.
How to Use the Gravel Calculator
This gravel quantity calculator combines area, depth, volume, density, and optional waste in one simple estimate.
Choose the gravel type
Select general gravel, pea gravel, crushed stone, river rock, limestone, or enter a custom density supplied for your material.
Enter length, width, and depth
Measure each project section. Length, width, and depth can use different units, including feet, inches, yards, meters, and centimeters.
Add project areas
Add another area or duplicate the last one for repeated sections. The gravel estimator combines all project areas automatically.
Review yards, tons, and bags
See cubic yards, cubic feet, cubic meters, estimated tons, and weight. You can also turn on bag quantity and add a waste allowance.
How Gravel Volume and Weight Are Calculated
The gravel calculation starts with project volume. Weight is then estimated from the selected material density.
When all dimensions are in feet, the result is cubic feet. Divide cubic feet by 27 to calculate gravel in cubic yards.
- Surface area = length × width
- Volume = surface area × depth
- Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27
Gravel weight varies by material, grading, moisture, and compaction. The calculator uses the selected estimating density, then converts pounds to US tons and kilograms.
Gravel Calculation Examples
These examples show how depth changes the gravel volume required for a project.
10 ft × 10 ft area, 2 in deep
Volume: 16.67 ft³
Cubic yards: 16.67 ÷ 27
20 ft × 10 ft area, 3 in deep
Volume: 50 ft³
Cubic yards: 50 ÷ 27
30 ft × 12 ft area, 4 in deep
Volume: 120 ft³
Cubic yards: 120 ÷ 27
Gravel Estimator for Driveways and Landscaping
A gravel estimator helps convert project dimensions into a practical material quantity. Measure the area and planned depth, then calculate cubic yards and approximate weight. This approach works for gravel driveways, landscape beds, paths, bases, road sections, and other aggregate projects.
Gravel Driveway Calculator
For a driveway, measure each rectangular section separately if the width or depth changes. Enter the finished gravel depth and add multiple project areas when needed. The calculator totals the volume and estimated tons across all entered sections.
Pea gravel calculator
Pea gravel is often used for paths, landscaping, and decorative applications. Select the pea gravel option to use its built-in estimating density, or use a supplier-specific density if available.
Crushed stone and crushed rock calculator
Crushed stone and crushed rock are commonly used for bases, driveways, drainage, and construction work. The calculator can estimate both cubic yards and tons from the selected density, which makes it useful as an aggregate calculator as well.
River rock and landscape rock calculator
River rock and landscape rock can vary widely in size and density. Use the appropriate material option as an estimate, but confirm the supplier’s coverage or density when ordering decorative stone.
Drain rock and drainage gravel
Drainage projects such as French drains often use clean gravel or drain rock around pipe and fabric. Measure the trench dimensions and depth to estimate the volume, then adjust for any space occupied by pipe or other components if needed.
Gravel Volume, Coverage, and Weight Reference
These relationships explain the most common outputs from a gravel yard calculator and gravel weight calculator.
| Calculation | Formula / Value | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Surface area | Length × Width | Square-foot coverage |
| Volume | Length × Width × Depth | Gravel quantity |
| Cubic feet → cubic yards | ft³ ÷ 27 | Supplier yardage |
| Pounds → US tons | lb ÷ 2,000 | Estimated gravel tonnage |
| Bag quantity | Total weight ÷ bag weight, rounded up | Bagged gravel estimate |
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers about gravel quantity, cubic yards, tons, coverage, and common material types.
How much gravel do I need?
Measure the project length, width, and gravel depth. Multiply those dimensions to get volume, then convert to cubic yards and estimate weight using the selected gravel density.
How do I calculate gravel volume?
For a rectangular area, multiply length × width × depth. If all measurements are in feet, divide the cubic-foot result by 27 to get cubic yards.
How many tons of gravel do I need?
Tons depend on both volume and density. This calculator estimates tons using the density of the selected gravel type or a custom density you enter.
Can I use this as a pea gravel calculator?
Yes. Choose Pea Gravel from the material list to use the included estimating density, then enter your project dimensions and depth.
Can I calculate crushed stone or river rock?
Yes. Crushed Stone and River Rock are included material options, along with General Gravel and Limestone.
Can I use this gravel calculator for a driveway?
Yes. Enter the driveway length, width, and planned gravel depth. Add additional project areas if the driveway has sections with different dimensions.
How do I calculate gravel coverage?
Coverage starts with surface area, but the amount of material also depends on depth. Multiply square feet by depth in feet to calculate volume.
Can the calculator estimate bags of gravel?
Yes. Turn on the bag estimate, enter the bag weight in pounds or kilograms, and the calculator rounds the required quantity up to the next whole bag.
